Several Ideas On Homegrown Fruits And Vegetables
It seems that planting a home garden has become quite popular in the last few years. If this is something you might find in your future, there are as few things that you should be aware of when starting out in gardening. It looks easy when you see someone else doing it, but all that produce did not grow all by itself. There was a lot of work involved on the part of the gardener.
There is a good and bad way to break up the soil, especially if it has never been used as a place to grow food before. Digging it up with a spade is one way but it is the hardest. The fastest is the tiller, but equally as hard on your body, especially creating neck pain from holding the darn thing back. It can take off like a wild animal if you're not careful.
That tiller is actually a good piece of equipment to have around. The whole concept is to break up the ground and make a smooth bed to plant seeds and plants into. Rocks and dirt clods have no business being in there. Some vegetables even like early planting to take advantage of the cooler weather, which they prefer. Potatoes and peas are two of those. They seem to go together, providing young taters to mix with creamed peas, as some folks like to do. The rest of that root veggie can grow to maturity.
After smoothing the seed bed, check your seed packet carefully to find the depth to place each seed and how far apart they should be. Most times, you must plant quite thickly and then thin them out later, as they begin to get their first leaves.
Lately, there has been seen a new and easy way to grow some of your vegetables, such as tomatoes. Obtain a unique bag of soil that allows one to insert the plant into the bottom or side of the soil mixture and hang it upside down from a beam in, perhaps, your patio. Water it thoroughly and stand back. No more back-breaking tilling and hoeing to keep down the weeds.
Some gardeners plant long rows of seeds several feet apart. A different kind of garden is one that enables you to avoid walking on the ground around the plants. This is accomplished by making your garden patch about eight feet square You can then reach those veggies and fruits from the edges, never treading upon the soil. Packed soil will not be a problem then.
The female half of a couple is often the one planting and caring for the food growing spot. It would be so kind of her partner to reward her hard work with a little something special, such as a fanciful scarf, favorite book or even a crystal necklace to adorn her neck. After all, if mama is happy, everyone is happy.
