Use The Proper Protective Chainsaw Gear
When you start up your chainsaw and get down to business, you run the risk of injury from a variety of sources. Luckily, there is a wealth of gear on the market to protect your body from the rending, tearing blade you hold in your hands. From head to toe, no matter what brand of chainsaw you use, no matter what size the blade on the end, it is important to dress yourself in the proper safety gear.
There are several ways to get hurt when you are felling trees. The tree itself can hit you as it falls or branches might spring loose at any moment as the tree settles. The saw itself is so loud that it can threaten your hearing. Always use a black helmet with appropriate hearing protection.
When you are on the ground and someone else is up in the tree, the value of the helmet increases. Branches, tools or other equipment can suddenly drop out of the tree, causing serious injury or maybe death. With the proper helmet on, though, the impact is spread out, leaving you with only a headache rather than permanent brain damage.
Maybe you use an Echo chainsaw and want to use that brand for the rest of your gear. Go ahead, but remember that it is not necessary. The gear, unlike chains, is interchangeable. You wear it on your body, so it can be used with any brand of saw.
Now that the head and ears are safely ensconced, let's see what there is available to protect your eyes. You have two main choices-safety goggles or a visor. Or maybe you want both. It's up to you. The visor attaches to the helmet and protects from flying wood chips, because properly sharpened saws do not spray sawdust. Besides, the large lattice on the visor protects the operator but affords excellent vision.
Finally, you have to put something on your legs and feet. There are full trousers made from protective fabric, or chaps for the part-time sawyer. For the feet, any leather boot with hard, steel toes will offer adequate protection.
How about a different brand of saw? Will that change what you wear? No, it won't. A McCulloch chainsaw is the same as any other brand: they all require safety equipment. There are even legal requirements regarding safety gear. Check with the authorities in your area. Always obey the law!
