Save A Ton Of Money On An Almost New Car!
There isn't anything quite like having a brand new car. Everything about the car is pristine. There are no stains on the upholstery, no scratches or dings, and it even has that great new car smell. Unfortunately as we all know, these things don't last very long, and you're left with payments on a new car.
Amazingly (at least to me) you can get a low mileage late model car for a a much lower price. Auto dealers have a huge supply of late model used cars. It baffles me where these barely used cars come from. I recently saw a 2008 Cadillac CTS with 7,000 miles for sale at a Chicago used car dealer. There’s a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe available for $19,000 at a Kern County Hyundai dealership. And a 2008 Nissan Sentra for $13,000 at a Los Angeles Nissan Dealer. Who paid for a brand new car, only to get rid of it while it was still pretty new? Perhaps they couldn't afford their car loans.Perhaps they buy or lease a new car every year? Go figure? The important thing is that you can now own it for significantly less than they paid - and you're getting a much better value!
Pricing
Logic would say that the price of a used car would be the same as its price new, less the miles that have been driven, any damage, and of course depreciation because last year’s model is not as desirable as this year’s model. That depreciation turns out to be significant. If you had bought that same car last year, you would still be happy with your purchase, even if the manufacturer has released a new model with the latest features. You'd probably still owe more on it than it’s worth. But when they go to buy a car, most people want the latest and greatest. Inside of a year, they'll own a used car.
So why not get the benefit of this bias which excessively lowers the market value of used vehicles? Find a car you like, then look at one that’s only a year or two old. Most car dealers will certify vehicles that are in good condition and have a limited number of miles. You can still finance a used car, just like you can finance a new car. Many of these cars are still covered by their original factory warranty, and the dealership often sells extended warranties.
Take Advantage of a Year or Two's Worth of Knowledge
Sometimes when a new model is released, there are unknown problems. Many consumer advocate groups and car magazines test the new car models each year and publish the results of their tests. But they only get to test the cars for a short period of time. Some information, like how reliable a car is just isn’t available until thousands of them are on the road over an extended period of time. When you buy a used car, some of this information is available to you before you commit. Besides, even the best cars have recalls over the first year or two. With a used car, many of these problems have already been taken care of.
So if, like the rest of us, you are watching expenses, think about buying a used car with low mileage. An auto dealership that sells new cars is a great place to buy a reliable used car of the same make. They have a good selection, sales people who are familiar with the car, and factory trained technicians who can service your car going forward.
