Solar Power Inverter
The inverter is one of the key parts of any solar power system.
In most home solar systems, power is initially generated by solar panels before being used to charge batteries. The solar power battery then provides power to fixtures in the home. This makes sure that power is available in the dark, when the solar panels themselves aren’t generating. Of the two varieties of electricity, solar panels and batteries both deal with Direct Current (DC). This needs to be converted to Alternating Current (AC), which is used by appliances in the home. Solar power inverters are responsible for converting the DC electricity to AC.
Currently, there are both Modified Sine Wave (MSW) and True Sine Wave (TSW) inverters in use. Of the two, MSW inverters are the more bare-bones type, as they only convert DC electricity into the simplest form of AC power. Some appliances, such as computers, which use particular types of power sources don’t have any issues with MSW inverters, but MSW inverters can cause difficulties in other cases. For example, when used in conjunction with an MSW inverter, audio equipment will often produce a noticeable hum. TSW inverters don’t suffer from these issues, and so they are usually the preferred choice for homeowners.
Maintaining an inverter requires a few precautions. The inverter should be in close proximity the batteries, but not actually in the same box. The wire connecting the batteries to the inverter needs to be of sufficient size. The correct size will probably be provided in the inverter manual. All wires to and from the inverter should have a fuse. As is the case with any electrical appliance, the inverter can not be exposed to moisture or extreme temperatures.
There are two issues which are farily common for people using solar power inverters. The first issue is RF interference. Inverters produce radio noise while they work. Any kind of receiver should be placed as far away from the inverter as possible. Another solution is to use a battery powered radio, the batteries for which can be recharged at any time through the solar power system.
So-called “phantom loads” represent the other common issue. This refers to the electricity that is drawn by certain electronic devices, such as many new televisions, while they’re turned off. Since they’re always using energy, these devices keep inverters from going to sleep. This in turn means that inverters themselves end up using more power than they really need to. If you’re able to connect the devices producing the phantom loads to a power strip with an on/off switch, you can solve this problem. Turning the power strip off will prevent the devices from draining electricity, allowing the inverter to switch to its low power mode.
