WTO Authorities Rule Boeing Broke Intercontinental Trade Laws And Regulations
Airline travel is seriously hurt with the global economic downturn which is why expanding fleets for new airlines is no longer a thing asked for. Large government subsidies have been accepted by aircraft producers that are attempting to boost the net income in any way possible. According to Reuters, the storied American airline manufacturer, Boeing, is in trouble with the World Trade Organization (WTO) for getting government subsidies to take advantage of the situation and compete with Airbus, the European competitor. The $20 billion in subsidies is being challenged by the European Union, as outlined by sources.
The WTO has pointed at Boeing and Airbus
The WTO judge's ruling against Boeing is at the moment confidential and will not be officially released until mid-2011. Of course, United States of America and European officials have received the statement. Some of the findings within the case have been appealed already. The appeal came from both Boeing and Airbus. Reuters explains that relations between aerospace travel in the transatlantic are bad right now. This is why it is weird that the WTO ruling may mean Boeing and Airbus may have to come up with a settlement. Airbus was previously condemned in June 2010 for taking a sizable money advance within the form of a government subsidy from the EU.
There are some research contracts and tax breaks going on
This may be an example of one power crying foul because they were reprimanded for the very thing the other power is currently attempting to get away with. According to European sources, Boeing took $17 billion in research contracts from NASA and the Pentagon, and loved $4 billion in tax breaks from the corporation's home state of Washington. Even though technically there is no rule about accepting government aid, the WTO said intercontinental trade laws were busted when accepting the tax breaks and government contracts. The main point of contention on Boeing's part is Airbus was essentially allowed to get away with a stern glance, they claim. Boeing thought that what is being done to them is rude. It thinks it wasn't doing anything wrong with the contracts.
Calls for President Obama's involvement
The feud between Boeing and Airbus might only be solved with "negotiations at the highest political level," according to EU trade spokesman John Clancy who talked to Reuters. However, United States of America officials have opposed coming to the table unless the EU stops subsidizing the production of the Airbus A350, which U.S. officials feel is really comparable to support the WTO has decided against. Boeing claims it has done nothing to harmed the transatlantic aerospace market. It does say, nevertheless, that Airbus with its EU practices isn't following the same ideas.
