Audi Servicing and History
The company that came to be known as Audi was formed in 1889 by Aug Horch and his business partners. But a dispute between the two lead Horch to leave his company and start a new company of his very own. Unable to use his very own name due to copyright conventions (His name was used for the prior company), he had to think creatively. "Horch" is German for "hear", and in a simplified solution brought on by a recommendation from his son while studying latin, Horch simply used the alternate latin version, "Audi". Bought by Volkswagen in 1966 and introduced to the US in 1970, Audi has set the benchmark for quality in German autos. With doors that close like vaults and impeccably made interiors, other manufacturers have struggled to catch up to the richness and quality of Audi's engineering.
Audi has been at the forefront of engine innovations since the releasing of the 1st Audi, the Type B, was released in 1910. Their famed inline 2.1/2.2L 5 cylinder engines were utilized for quite some time in both their production and racing vehicles. Thanks to the timing in a 5 cylinder engine, the engine is permanently in a "power stroke", or in other words, a cylinder is always firing that leads to a larger potency and power delivery. Other outstanding engine advances would be the 6L W12 engine, which featured four rows of 3 cylinders which was formed by joining two VR6 engine blocks on a single crankshaft.
Initially introduced in 1933, the auto air conditioner was more of a harebrained luxury item than anything else, usually reserved for the rich and renowned who drove high-end luxury cars. Packard Motor Company was the first to offer factory installed air conditioners, which they implemented in 1939 for a price of $274 (around $4,500 today). The 1954 Nash Ambassador was the 1st American auto to supply a fully integrated in-dash system similar to those available now. Most air conditioners have compressors which are fixed on the engine and are driven via a belt which leeches power from the engine. A new cooling system which uses an analogous configuration to a household fridge is slated for production around 2015. When you think about Audi transmission and drivetrains, one word should instantly spring to mind. Quattro. Initially introduced in 1980 after racing laws modified to permit 4 wheel drive vehicles, the Audi Quattro broke onto the racing scene in a big fashion.
